10 beautiful places to visit in Iceland

1. Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon

The Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon is another of Iceland's great tourist attractions, thanks to the icebergs of all sizes that float in its icy waters.

During our trip, we visited this lagoon up to three times, at different times of the day, to keep in mind one of the most impressive landscapes we have ever seen and will not forget. These icebergs are breaking off a large glacier due to global warming and can wash up on the beach or get stuck on the shores, allowing you to get close to them and touch them. In this lake, it is common to see seals or take a boat trip among icebergs.

Before reaching Jökulsárlón, we recommend you stop at the Fjallsárlón Glacier Lagoon to see the same phenomenon but with a little less beauty.

2. East Fjords

A drive through the East Fjords along the coast along Highway 1 from Djúpivogur, a town where you can see several typical turf houses, to the beautiful city of Seyðisfjörður is another of the best experiences in Iceland.

Along the way, you will pass through several fjords such as Berufjördur, more than 20 kilometers long, Stödvarfjördur, Fáskrúdsfjördur, and Mjóifjördur until you reach the quiet and isolated fishing village of Seyðisfjörður, also located on a beautiful fjord.

3. Hengifoss waterfall, one of the places to visit in Iceland

The next stop on the route through the most important places to visit in Iceland is the Hengifoss Waterfall, the second-highest in the country, with a 120-meter drop.

Before reaching this impressive waterfall, located an hour's walk from the car park, you will pass by the no less spectacular Litlanesfoss Waterfall, surrounded by volcanic basalt columns.

4. Lake Myvatn

In addition to relaxing thermal baths at the spa located on the Jardbadshólark hill, the area around Lake Mývatn has several treasures to discover, such as the Hverir geothermal area, full of fumaroles and boiling mud pits.

Other landscapes that seem to be taken from the planet Mars are the impressive Leirhnjúkur crater, the volcanic formations of Dimmuborgir, the massive hole with an almost perfect conical shape of Hverfjall, the pseudocraters of Skútustaðir and the crystal-clear cave Grjótagjá.
Although our favorite landscape around the lake is the Viti crater, which belongs to the vast Krafla volcano and has a beautiful green lake inside.

5. Dettifoss Falls

Dettifoss and Selfoss, together with the smaller Hafragilfoss, all located in the course of the Fjöllum River in the Vatnajökull National Park, are among the most spectacular sets of waterfalls in Europe.

The most impressive is Dettifoss, considered the mightiest in Europe, with a width of 100 meters and a drop of 44 meters over a large canyon. It is worth approaching the east bank (road F864) to enjoy the best views and hear the noise of the force of the water.

Dettifoss is located halfway to the Selfoss and Hafragilfoss waterfalls, so it is worth spending some extra time to see them all. We assure you, you will not regret it!

6. Excursion to Askja

Several tours depart from Lake Mytvan to discover some of the wonders of the Highlands, such as the one that will take you to the Askja volcano, an 8-kilometer-wide caldera formed after the largest volcanic eruption in the country and another of the places to visit in Iceland.

The excursion to Askja, which will take you a whole day, only takes place in summer, and it is essential to have a 4×4 as you will pass through an unpaved road (type F) where you have to ford several rivers.

After crossing desert landscapes, you will arrive at the Caldera de Askja car park, and from there, you will have to walk for half an hour to see the incredible blue contrast between Lake Askja and the Víti crater. In the latter, you have the possibility of taking a relaxing bath in its waters that maintain a temperature between 20 and 30 degrees after going down a steep slope.

7. Husavik Whale Watching

Another of the experiences we remember the most from our trip to Iceland is the whale watching in Husavik, although one of us remembers it more than the other because of the dizziness he suffered from seeing the spectacle of these vast cetaceans jumping.
This tour, which departs from the tourist town of Husavik, can be done in different types of boats, and its size will determine whether you can get closer or closer to the whales, although always keeping a safe distance to interfere as little as possible with their natural trajectory.
We recommend doing the excursion before eating and taking a biodramine pill if you are prone to seasickness and not to worry about the cold, since once on the boat, you will be provided with warm and waterproof clothing.

8. Godafoss, another place to see in Iceland

Godafoss, known as "the waterfall of the gods" and located next to the Ring Road in a volcanic landscape, is one of the most beautiful waterfalls to visit in Iceland.

This waterfall of 12 meters high by about 30 long is characterized by being divided in two by a large rock located in the center, and it is pretty standard, as it happened to us, that on sunny days, a fantastic rainbow appears.

9. Westfjords

If you have extra days, we suggest you get closer to the wildest and most unexplored Iceland in the West Fjords area.

To get to this place full of volcanic mountains and fjords, you will have to leave the Ring Road and travel through several unpaved roads that will take you to the most authentic and less touristy landscapes of the island, such as the incredible Dynjandi waterfall, the cliffs of Látrabjarg, the Pollurinn Hot Springs and the Hvitanes Peninsula, a perfect place to see seals and birds.

10. Snaefellsnes Peninsula

To finish this list of the important places to visit in Iceland, we suggest you visit the Snaefellsnes Peninsula, which shows on a small scale everything that this trip offers: waterfalls, volcanoes, glaciers, lava fields, and cliffs.

One of our favorite spots on this peninsula is Kirkjufell, a curious cone-shaped mountain almost 500 meters high, which has become one of the icons of the country and is close to the beautiful Kirkjufellsfoss waterfall.

Other attractions in this area are the Arnarstapi cliffs, the Djúpalónssandur black beach, the Ingjaldshóll church, the Berserkjahraun lava field, the Ytri Tunga seal beach, and Snaefellsjökull, the glacier that inspired Jules Verne to write the"Journey to the Center of the Earth."
