| Panoramic views of Heidelberg from Philosopher's Walk in Germany |
One of the most beautiful tourist routes you can do in Germany is to go through the Neckar River Valley, which runs winding through wooded hills and where you will find beautiful villages and castles.
This tour begins (or ends…) in Heidelberg, a charming city located to the north of the tour, with a historical prestige for being the seat of the first University of Germany founded in 1386.
During a long weekend, I have had the opportunity to walk and enjoy this beautiful German city in which the university atmosphere prevails.

From that experience, below I am going to point out what to see and what to do on your visit to Heidelberg in one day.
What to see in one day in Heidelberg
Stroll down the pedestrian street Haupstrasse
In Heidelberg, you will have the opportunity to walk along the longest pedestrian street in Germany, the Haupstrasse.
This street stretches from the center of the modern city, Bismark Square, where all public transportation is concentrated, to the heart of the old city, Market Square.
The beautiful and colorful baroque-style buildings, and the great animation of shops and establishments, make this walk the best option to get in touch with the city.

Marketplace
Center of the old city, in the Market Square you can see the Church of the Holy Spirit, the oldest in Heidelberg, and the Town Hall, two of the most outstanding monuments of this German city.
But on your visit to Market Square, you should especially pay attention to the beautiful building with a stone facade of the Zum Ritter House, one of the few that remain after the almost destruction of the city in 1622.
Also known as the Knight's House, this very nice building was built in 1592.
Cross the Carlos Teodoro bridge
Very close to the Plaza del Mercado you have the historic Carlos Teodoro bridge, with the Carlos gate in the foreground, one of the iconic points of the city

This bridge that crosses the river and through which you will access the viewpoints of the Paseo de Los Filósofos was built in 1784.
Next to the bridge, you will find another of Heidelberg's current icons, the popular sculpture known as the Monkey on the Bridge, installed in the 1970s.
Viewpoints of the Philosophers' Walk
As I have mentioned. Crossing the Carlos Teodoro bridge you can go up the path known as Paseo de los Filósofos .
From its viewpoints you have, without a doubt, the best panoramic views of Heidelberg, so going up this walk should become an essential visit.

Take the funicular up to Heidelberg Castle
Using the first section of the funicular, the most modern in Germany, you arrive at Heidelberg Castle, another essential corner to visit in this German city.
Most of Heidelberg Castle is currently in ruins, although you can visit the central courtyard and some interior rooms.
And you will also have to walk through its gardens until you reach the viewpoint from where in the morning you have very good panoramic views of Heidelberg.
Visit the Student Jail
In the University Square, you see the buildings of the old University of Heidelberg facing each other and the new one created in 1931 with the help of the Americans.

Cárcel de Estudiantes de la antigua Universidad de Heidelberg
But the most recommendable thing is, without a doubt, to visit the curious old Jail of Students.
This prison worked from 1823 for almost a hundred years, and students who committed minor infractions were held there and were sanctioned by the authority of the university itself.
Your visit will draw your attention to the graffiti and drawings that cover the walls and ceilings of the old cells.
Visit the Jesuit church
Baroque in style, built in 1712, the façade of the Jesuit Church in Heidelberg will remind you of the Church of the Gesú in Rome.
Also when you visit this church you will be surprised by the great luminosity of its interior.
